Understanding Your Pet's Body Language

Understanding Your Pet's Body Language

Pets communicate through body language, and learning to read their signals can deepen your bond and help you respond to their needs more effectively. Here's a guide to understanding what your pet is telling you.

Signs of a Happy Pet

A wagging tail (in dogs), slow blinking (in cats), relaxed posture, and playful behaviour are all signs your pet is content and comfortable. A dog with a loose, wiggly body is generally happy and at ease.

Signs of Stress or Anxiety

Watch for flattened ears, tucked tails, excessive grooming, yawning, or hiding. These behaviours often indicate your pet is feeling stressed or overwhelmed and may need a calm, quiet space to retreat to.

Signs of Aggression

Growling, hissing, stiff posture, raised hackles, and direct staring can signal that your pet feels threatened. Give them space and avoid forcing interaction in these moments.

Signs of Pain or Illness

Lethargy, loss of appetite, excessive vocalization, or changes in toileting habits can be signs that your pet is unwell. If you notice these, consult your vet promptly.

Building Better Communication

Spending quality time observing your pet helps you understand their baseline behaviour. The better you know your pet's normal, the quicker you'll notice when something is off.
